The Backstopper™ CA-5040 is a rear impact warning sensor and camera system designed to aid the driver when backing up their vehicle. The system uses four 21mm ultrasonic waterproof sensors that are flush mounted into the rear bumper as well as a 170° flush-mount CMOS camera to detect any objects behind the car and also give the driver a view behind the vehicle. Unlike the CA-5030 system, the CA-5040 does not include a monitor. It is designed to be integrated with an existing factory in-dash monitor. The system will display the camera image and sensor readings on the in-dash monitor when the system is hooked up. The driver will also be alerted with audible tones from a external buzzer. As the vehicle approaches closer to the object, the tones will get faster and faster until to tell the driver the distance is closing.

The sensors are installed on the bumper between 1½ ft. to 2½ ft. from the ground surface and the wide detection angle will alert the driver of any small children, pedestrians, animals or small unseen objects such as bicycles or parking poles and the sensors will start to pick up anything behind the vehicle at about six feet. This makes it very convenient for parking in a parking garage, a crowded lot or even in your own driveway. To make the installation more appealing to the eye, the sensors can be painted to match the color of the vehicle.

The 170° flush mount CMOS camera will give the driver a wide angle view to see what’s going on behind the vehicle and can be installed anywhere on the back of the vehicle (Trunk lid, bumper, etc.). The system includes a 18.8mm hole saw bit to drill the hole for the camera. If you cannot find a place to flush-mount the camera, the CA-5030 kit comes with a lip-mount bracket which can be swapped out with the flush-mount bracket so the camera can be installed underneath the license plate bezel.

For the driver to be able to view the camera and the sensor readings, the CA-5040 system can be integrated with any aftermarket in-dash monitor that uses an RCA video input. The monitor will provide a crystal-clear picture for the reverse camera and the sensor readings will also be displayed on the monitor as well inside the camera image. This way if the driver see something behind the car, they will know how far it is behind the bumper.

When it comes to vehicles that have spare tire racks, bike racks or tow hitches that protrude off of the back of the vehicle, parking sensors can sometimes be difficult because they will pick up the protrusions and mistake them for something behind the vehicle and give the driver a false alert. Fortunately, the CA-5040 has “Intelligent Detection” which will allow the system to adjust the sensors and make them start their detection further out from the bumper so they will not pick up the protrusions. This will eliminate any false alerts from being giving to the driver when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The Intelligent Detection setting can be adjusted by a small switch on the side of the main control module.
